09-May-2026
CHENNAI ?(Bureau), May 9, 2026,In a swift and decisive turn of political events, C. Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is poised to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The path to government formation was cleared today after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) officially extended their support to the TVK-led alliance, pushing the coalition past the required majority mark of 119 seats.
The Numbers Game: How the Alliance Adds Up
Following the 2026 Assembly elections which resulted in a hung house, the TVK emerged as the single largest party. With todays developments, the coalition strength has reached 121 seats:
Party Seats:Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)107 (Effective strength)
Congress 5
IUML 2
VCK 2
CPI 2
CPI (M)3
Total Alliance Strength 121
VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan personally handed over the letter of support to TVKs Aadhav Arjuna in Chennai earlier today. Shortly after, the IUML announced its unconditional support for Vijay s leadership.
Stalin Concedes, DMK to Move to Opposition
Former Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin addressed the shift in power via a post on X (formerly Twitter). While acknowledging the new formation to avoid the current crisis, he noted that the DMK-led secular alliance remains intact on a policy basis.
Stalin also took a sharp swipe at former allies, specifically the Congress, noting that their MLAs did not visit the DMK headquarters (Anna Arivalayam) to offer thanks after the election, instead choosing to sever ties and join the TVK-led bloc. DMK will be a constructive Opposition, Stalin affirmed.
Legal Battle Over Governors Delay
The political victory comes amidst a heated legal backdrop. Two petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekars perceived delay in inviting Vijay to form the government.
A writ petition filed by retired IPS officer M. Ramasubramani argues that the Governors insistence on demonstrating requisite majority before an invitation is issued is contrary to constitutional conventions. The petition maintains that the majority should be proven on the floor of the House through a floor test, rather than through the subjective satisfaction of the Governor at Raj Bhavan.
Race Against the Clock
The political drama is peaking as Governor Arlekar is scheduled to depart for Thiruvananthapuram on a 7:10 p.m. flight tonight. TVK leader Vijay is expected to meet with the Governor shortly before his departure to present the consolidated letters of support and officially stake his claim to form the first coalition government in Tamil Nadus recent history.
