Kolkata (Bureau): West Bengal Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, on Saturday praised the West Bengal Police after a massive cache of illegal firearms and ammunition was recovered from a pond in Sandeshkhali, located in North 24 Parganas district.
In a post on X, Adhikari lauded the Special Task Force (STF) for conducting a successful operation based on precise intelligence inputs. According to him, the STF carried out extensive raids at multiple locations near Sarberia Bazaar, Kumrakhali, Basanti, and Sandeshkhali, leading to the seizure of a large quantity of illegal weapons allegedly hidden to disrupt peace and law and order.
The recovery was made during a search operation conducted by the STF in the Manipur area of Sandeshkhali on Saturday morning following a tip-off from a confidential source. During the operation, officers recovered a significant cache of firearms and cartridges concealed inside a pond reportedly owned by Trinamool Congress leader and former regional president Robin Das.
Police sources said that Robin Das and his brother, Gopal Das, fled the area before the raid. Authorities are investigating the source of the weapons and their intended use.
Reacting to the development, Suvendu Adhikari appreciated the efforts of the states law enforcement agencies. I highly appreciate the prompt action and exemplary coordination of the Director General of Police (DGP), the West Bengal Police, the STF team, and the Basirhat Police District personnel for this successful operation, he said.
Adhikari also shared a video clip of the arms recovery and alleged that the weapons had been stockpiled to intimidate ordinary citizens and target BJP workers. He claimed that such illegal arms had been used for years to create fear and violence against opposition party members, particularly BJP karyakartas.
The BJP leader further stated that the state administration and police would continue their efforts to recover illegal arms and ammunition to ensure peace and security in the region. Meanwhile, the investigation into the recovered weapons is ongoing.
